Lion Dancers. Jan. 13. Celebrate the Lunar New Year with a Chinese Lion Dance and martial arts performance. Multiple shows are set throughout the day. FREE. San Francisco.

Mochi Pounding. Jan. 20. Celebrate the Japanese New Year with Kagami Kai, an acclaimed mochi group as it presents the colorful and exciting New Year tradition of mochi pounding to make it delectably sweet rice cakes with lively music, energetic dance and traditional costumes at the Asian Art Museum. CuriOdyssey Community Day. Jan. 26. Explore science, meet native California animals and enjoy tons of interactive exhibits and experiments for free at CuriOdyssey’s Community Day. FREE. San Mateo.

East Bay

First Sunday. Jan. 7. Start the New Year with an educational day at the Oakland Museum of California and see the special exhibitions “Nature's Gift: Humans, Friends & The Unknownand “Metamorphosis & Migration: Days of the Dead” before they leave the museum this month. 10am-6pm. Harlem Globetrotters. Jan. 13. Witness the ball-handling wizardry and basketball artistry as this iconic team visits Oakland once again on its world tour. Join Globetrotter stars after the game where they will stay for autographs, photographs and high-five sessions. Also Jan. 20. Oakland. 

All Aboard Weekend. Jan. 20-21. Visit Diablo Valley Lines’ 2018 weekend whistle stop show featuring hundreds of model trains representing the mid-20th century through today. 11am-6pm. $3 adults, $2 children ages 6-12, under 6 FREE. Walnut Creek.
