Take a Stand with Newsies!
Newsies tells the story of Jack Kelly, a newsboy in New York City who longs for an easier life out west. When newspaper publishers Pulitzer and Hearst set about to make more money off newspaper sales by decreasing pay to the “newsies,” Kelly gathers his band of newsboys to strike and demand what they deserve from the publishing giants.
The Broadway San Jose performance keeps you on the edge of your seat and has you tapping your feet along with the tap-dancing newsboys. The predominantly male cast leaps, flips and never stops dancing throughout the whole 2 ½ hours. The energetic “Seize the Day” number had the audience clapping and cheering as the newsies danced on chairs and spun around on destroyed newspapers.
Throughout the show we hear the sad stories of the newsies – orphan boys trying to survive on the streets of New York. It is only when a spunky girl reporter takes on their cause that they are able to get the word out and unite against the publishers. The lessons learned about standing up for what you believe in and not cowering to the “Goliath” are great themes to discuss with your kids after the show.
This production really outdid itself with the ever-changing steel stage that was almost an additional three-dimensional character in the show. We were amazed to see how the newsies could dance from the stage all the way up the stairs to the third level of this behemoth, all while it was spinning and moving from one side of the stage to the other.
Everyone in the audience loved the charismatic Jack Kelly and our hearts went out to Crutchie, the newsboy who struggles hard to keep up with all of his comrades. My daughter was particularly enamored by the young Les, with a strong voice and comedic antics that played well with his diminutive stature.
If you have the opportunity, take the kids to see Newsies. You will definitely leave with a skip in your step!
