Memorial Day Events Around the Bay Area


Memorial Day Service – The Marin County United Veterans Council will feature music, a remembrance program, a flag display and wreath-laying ceremonies. Mon., May 29. 9am. FREE. Marin Civic Center, 10 Avenue of the Flags, San Rafael.

Mill Valley Memorial Day Celebration – Festivities include a pancake breakfast and parade. Mon., May 29. Volunteer Firefighters Pancake Breakfast is 7-11am outside City Hall, 26 Corte Madera Ave. Adults $10, kids under 13 $5. Parade begins at 10:30am at Old Mill Park on Throckmorton Avenue and winds its way through downtown Mill Valley and Miller Avenue ending at Tam High School, 700 Miller Ave. FREE.  415-388-9700.

Muir Beach Volunteer Firemen’s Barbecue – This event includes food, activities for kids and dancing to live music by Andre Pessis and his All-Stars and opening band Soul Ska. Sun., May 28. 12-5pm. FREE; parking is $20. Santos Meadows on Frank Valley Road. 415-381-8793.

San Francisco

Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony – This is the largest Bay Area Memorial Day event paying tribute to veterans. Mon., May 29. The parade, featuring a band and veterans organizations, begins at 10:30am at Main Post on Anza between Sheridan and Lincoln Boulevard and ends at the national cemetery. A formal program with politicians and other speakers begins at 11am and concludes with a 21-gun salute. FREE. The Presidio.


Hillsborough Memorial Day Parade, Carnival and Music Festival – The carnival begins at North Hillsborough Elementary School Mon., May 29 at 10am and includes games, crafts, a dunk tank and petting zoo. The parade starts at 10:30am at Town Hall and will go straight up Floribunda, left on Eucalyptus, finishing at North Hillsborough Elementary School. The ceremony and music festival begins immediately following the parade. The festivities conclude at 2:30pm. FREE.  North Hillsborough Elementary School, 545 Eucalyptus Ave. 650-375-7400.

Silicon Valley

Memorial Day Remembrance. May 29. This traditional remembrance features music and spoken tributes from local community leaders, veterans and military. After the hour-long program, enjoy a barbecue luncheon at the Portuguese Hall. $5 for BBQ lunch, admission FREE. Santa Cruz.

East Bay

Memorial Day Open House – Drop in to blow bubbles, hold chickens and enjoy the Nature Area and Little Farm. 11am-3pm. FREE. Tilden Nature Area, Environmental Education Center (EEC), north end of Central Park Drive, Berkeley. 510-544-2233.
