Where to Paint Pottery

Pottery-painting places have popped up all over the Bay Area, and families and singles drop in to create unique gifts or adornment for their own homes. Here are a few of our favorites:

North Bay and San Francisco

Terra Mia – Get your creative fix at this bright and friendly spot in San Francisco’s Noe Valley. Choose from a wall full of mugs, vases, bowls and other choices, and then sit down to paint with a diverse crowd. Drop in or book a group into the private party room. Doodlebug – You can do more than just paint pottery at Doodlebug’s art studio. There’s also mosaic making, decoupage, knitting and wood piece adornment. East Bay

Brushstrokes – Put your paintbrush to work on pottery and mosaics – or give glass fusing a try – in the “Potter’s Ghetto,” a historic arts district in West Berkeley. This studio offers hundreds of functional ceramic shapes, from piggy banks to serving platters. Drop in, take a class, plan a party or make a reservation for groups of eight or more. The Painters Pot – Choose from more than 160 pieces to decorate at a cozy, friendly place with no extra charge for drop-in studio time. Or come for a birthday party, glass-fusing, Mommy & Me, Daddy’s Night Out, school activities and other events. Your furry friend can also join in the fun with pet parties! Color Me Mine – With locations all over the world, this popular California-based pottery painting chain hosts everything from a kid’s birthday party to corporate events. Put your bridal party to work on signature keepsakes or throw a baby shower. Drop-ins are welcome but weekends get busy, so it’s best to make a reservation. Parties of five or more require a reservation. Bay Area locations also include Alameda, Fremont, San Jose, Lafayette, Menlo Park, Walnut Creek and Pleasanton. Laurel Street Arts – Two sisters own and operate this craft studio in downtown San Carlos, offering ceramics painting, mosaics, glass fusing and Lilly Ollo silver clay for drop-in, classes, parties and fundraisers. Silicon Valley

Petroglyph – This clean, attractive studio is popular for date nights as it’s open late and sits right in the center of San Jose’s Willow Glen neighborhood, with easy access to nearby restaurants. It’s also a good spot to bring the kids on a rainy day or for a party. Seating for drop-ins vary from tall café tables to lower work tables to front window-side. FireWorks Ceramics – The discreet three-room pottery-painting studio sits on the bottom floor of its owner’s home about a block from downtown Mountain View. While walk-ins are welcome, reservations are highly recommended. There is no studio fee and visitors are allowed to bring in their own snacks and drinks. There’s also a private party room to host birthdays, scout groups, bridal showers and team-building events. Open Wed.-Sun 11am-6pm. Prices for ceramics start at about $18 and go up.
