Models for California School Re-Opening

In Stronger Together: A Guidebook for the Safe Reopening of California’s Public Schools, the California Department of Education provides some suggestions for on-site school schedules with social distancing and safety in mind.
Two-Day Rotation Blended Learning Model. Students would report to school on two designated days based on grade level for in-person learning. On the other days, students would be involved in enrichment opportunities aligned with academic goals. On Fridays, all students would be engaged in distance learning opportunities while teachers pursue planning and professional development.
A/B Week Blended Learning Model. Half of the student population would attend in-person learning four full days per week while the other half would do distance learning. The students would alternate each week. One day a week all student would pursue remote learning opportunities while teachers would use the time for planning and professional development. Schools can also have certain grades attend only in-person instruction while other grades do distance learning instruction.
Looping Structure. Schools with transitional kindergarten through eighth grade can have students stay with the same teacher in cohorts for multiple grade levels. Looping provides opportunities for improved relationships between students and teachers, more targeted and efficient instruction, and a higher attendance rate. Teachers and students staying together over multiple grade levels can also build a better understanding of health and safety.
Early/Late Staggered Schedules. Grade level bands would have staggered start and dismissal times, such as A.M./P.M. rotations. The bell schedule would accommodate multiple recesses and lunch periods and meal distributions.
