Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Jan. 19 this year) marks a national day of service that is considered “a day on, not a day off.”
Here are some great ways to honor the legacy around the Bay Area.
2025 MLK March – JAN. 19. Each year, thousands of people commemorate the historic march from Selma to Montgomery by walking 1.5 miles from San Francisco’s CalTrain Station to Yerba Buena Gardens. Free transportation is provided by local agencies (advance ticket required.) See website for more information and additional events. FREE.

“In the Name of Love” – JAN. 17. This year’s event presented by Living Jazz will honor the vision and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. through the music of the Bay Area’s Sly and the Family Stone. 6pm. $20 and up.
Paramount Theatre, 2025 Broadway, Oakland
MLK Noontime Concert – JAN. 14. This free concert will launch San Francisco’s MLK Celebration Week with classical music evoking themes of peace, unity and the ongoing pursuit of social progress. 12:30pm. FREE.
Old St. Mary’s Cathedral, 660 California St., San Francisco
San Leandro MLK Celebration – JAN. 17. Hear original or well-known essays, speeches and poems celebrating Dr. King’s message of peace, tolerance and social justice, plus entertainment, crafts and refreshments. 10:30am. FREE.
Marina Community Center, 15301 Wicks Blvd., San Leandro
Shoreline Cleanup – JAN. 29. This Community Day of Service includes gardening and maintenance at the Memorial Grove (registration requested) and shoreline cleanup at the Oakport staging area and Tidewater Boating Center (walk-ups welcome). 9am-12pm. FREE.
