Welcome winter and celebrate the holidays with a festive ice-skating outing. Every year, seasonal rinks crop up through the Bay Area, in addition to several spots that are open for year-round skating fun. Little ones, or those less adept on slippery ice, can try out iceless or sock skating at a couple of venues.

Safeway Holiday Ice Rink
THROUGH JAN. 19. Get into the spirit of the season in Union Square by skating under the huge Christmas tree and enjoying special events from Flashback Fridays with ’80s music, Drag on Ice on Dec. 4, a silent disco on Dec. 11, Polar Bear Skate on Jan. 1 and more. There are also free hour-long skating lessons at 8am on Sat. and Sun., with entry by online lottery. Hour-long skate sessions start every 90 minutes. $22, $17 ages 8 and under; prices include skate rental, special events may have an additional charge.

Snoopy’s Home Ice
Built in 1969 by “Peanuts” creator Charles Schulz, this indoor rink near his eponymous museum evokes a Swiss alpine village. There are daily public skate sessions as well as Toddlers on Ice ($25) Wednesdays at 11am for ages 18 months-4 years old. $8-14 adults, $8-12 ages 11 and under; skate rental $2-4.

The Tech Interactive Sock Skating Rink
DEC. 21-JAN. 4. No skates needed! As part of its Polar Play Days, The Tech is offering an iceless rink for sliding fun, a safe first skating experience for kids. Kids under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. $10 plus general admission of $28 and up.
