Earth Day and Spring Crafts

Teach your children about the importance of preserving the Earth and celebrate spring with these fun projects from Bay Area mom Brittany Bacharach, owner and founder of the online community Stay at Home Activity Mom.

Sugar Cube Creations

Supplies:

• Sugar cubes

• Eye dropper

• Ice cube tray

• Food coloring

• Water

Directions:

Challenge your child to build the word “Earth” and create the Earth using just the sugar cubes. Then take an ice cube tray, fill it with different colored water (water mixed with a drop of food coloring) and give it to your child with eye droppers. Have them use the eye dropper to drop colored water onto the sugar cubes to color the planet they made. They can also add color to the word “Earth” if they want as well. After they are done with the activity, talk about different ways to keep our Earth beautiful, clean and healthy.

Egg Carton Tree

Supplies:

• Egg carton

• Piece of cardboard

• Paint/ paintbrush

• Scissors

• Liquid glue

Directions:

The next time you are done with an egg carton, reuse it for this art project instead of throwing it away. Cut out a few of the egg holders from the carton. Ask your child to paint a large tree with branches on the piece of cardboard. This should take up most of the piece of cardboard. Use the liquid glue to glue down some of the carton pieces scattered around the branches. Let it dry. Then paint the egg carton pieces to look like flowers in the tree. Let it dry and then put it on display in your home as a beautiful spring decoration!

Spring Graham Cracker Cottage

Supplies:

• Graham crackers

• Hot glue

• Frosting

• Peeps marshmallows

• Spring candy

Directions:

Break the crackers into squares instead of rectangles. Assemble a house leaving one side open so you can put things inside at the end of the project. Start by gluing together a base and then adding a roof.

Tip: use a hot glue gun to assemble the house. You won’t be able to eat it using hot glue, but the house will be much more sturdy. After the house is assembled, let it dry fully before decoratin. Use frosting and a variety of spring candies to decorate tho their own taste. Put a Peep marshmallow chick or bunny inside the cottage.
