The Face of Bay Area Literacy

LearnUp Centers is on a mission to teach all students how to read, and it’s working. The average LearnUp student advances over two grade levels in reading after 60 hours of tutoring at this San Francisco-based nonprofit literacy center. The one-on-one lessons take place in person and online, and can help any struggling reader, regardless of age or grade. Deputy Director Tara Giddings started as a LearnUp tutor eight years ago. “One of my students started as a fourth-grader reading at a first-grade level. He left reading at a fifth-grade level and now is going to go to college,” Giddings said. “That inspired me to make this my career.”
